America's 250th Birthday: July 4th White House Hot Dog Competition

            Dear Readers,

            This post might be a bit off track, but I was just scrolling on the Facebook and saw that NBC News reported on an upcoming food competition that I wasn't aware of.

          It reads:

         "[...]MLE and Nathan's Famous is holding a high capacity hot dog eating competition as part of a celebration honoring America's 250th birthday on July 4th, 2026. Many notable individuals to participate including Joey Chestnut, Takeru Kobayashi, and newcomer Brendan Laird, among others"     [NBC News Facebook, 26 May 2026]                                                

          Depending on if you are a new reader or someone whose been with me since the start, you may or may not know why this is a big deal to us eaters. Obviously I'm just smitten to see my namesake take on Kobayashi yet again, and on White Castle Front Lawn for America's 250th?? - the newcomer is really why I'm excited. 

        Brendan Laird is someone i've had my eye on since the beginning of his career. I think I might even be the first one to report on his career. He's really someone I'd bet on doing pretty well.

        Readers - please make sure to keep up with the event, and to show your support for Brendan Laird on July 4th 2026, as well as legends Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut. 

A Step Back In Time: Baking Brownies with Parker Edmonson

           Dear Readers,

           Firstly, thank you all for the continued support on and offline. Recently I met a few of you at the American Dream Mall and we decided to ride the ferris wheel together. Great view up there.

           Anyway - today I'd like to direct your attention to a unique individual. His name is Parker Edmonson, better known online as Dr. Parkinstine. I'm not entirely sure where his doctorate comes from but I wouldn't be surprised if he got it from Doc Brown!

        This Doctor, like I said, is a unique one. He lives his life the way that he wants to. Today I watched him make some brownies in an oven from the early 20th century. And get this, after he bakes the brownies - he eats them. It's insane. No timer, just eats them.

    His life is entirely surrounded and highlighted by his early 20th century technology and practices. His fashion, the food he makes, even his home decor.

An important thing I would like to highlight is something Parker said during the brownie video. "Food has been around for a long time" - It might take some serious historical context here because he is speaking from an early 20th century perspective, but I took this as him evaluating food challenges as not a commodity, but a necessity.  Just a few moments later, he says "I cook from the heart" - as he opens his oven to show the brownie tin to be a brownie tin with a particularly sweet non-biological heart shape. 

The "Joey Chestnut" of White Castle: BRENDAN LAIRD

     Dear Readers,

   On this edition of Rookie Mastication, I'd love to focus our collective attention to a unique exhibitor in the food challenge landscape. Many competitors seek to achieve the bravado and confidence that our subject Brendan Laird emits. 

    His parents originally didn't know what to do with him. They almost had to put him up for adoption. He would eat anything, and everything. Not always to completion, but always with confidence and some impressive speed.

    "They've always been incredibly supportive of my pursuit. Both of them show me the best way to be myself day in and day out. I think I got it from my dad, he used to down plastic water bottles for fun when I was growing up. Always made me think about where my passions may bring me." [june 21st, 2024] - Brendan speaking on his COMPETITIVE origins at the 6th annual "feeding america" benefit podcast telethon hosted by JASON BANO.

    He first rolled onto the scene between 1998 and 2020 for doing regular food challenges to impress his friends and loved ones. Most of these challenges remain unseen but experts say they included Brendan consuming receipt paper for pleasure - according to his coworkers at the local pharmacy. The constant feedback and criticism loop he received from the ones around him eventually led him to pursue a full time career in the competitive eating challenge industry, after the film industry failed to meet his expectations of excellence. 

    After his solid attempt at thirty White Castle sliders in a scathing thirty minutes, Joey Chestnut caught wind of Brendan's potential and reached out via email to take Brendan under his wing. After this relationship began, Brendan began his yearly pilgrimage to Coney Island on July 4th to watch his biggest inspiration take the stage at Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest. Brendan credits his success completely to Mr. Chestnut - despite Brendan's years of unmatched passion and skill.

    Pythagoras of samos couldn't have come up with better calculations for his "pizza science" theory - toward the middle of his second challenge video, where he attempts to take down an entire pepperoni pizza by himself in five minutes. THE MLE specifically cites Brendan Laird as the founder of this particular preliminary FOOD challenge practice STANDARD. Does anyone else on his level even practice these impeccable standards?     As an entertainer, he is simply unmatched in his execution. Once that timer starts, and dare I say, before the timer starts, Brendan is doing everything in his power to satisfy those around him. EVERYONE, His friends, the onlookers, even people he has never met - including yous reading at home - Brendan cares about your viewing experience. He is a selfless being and nobody even comes close to him when it comes to a genuine passion for putting things in his mouth at a rapid rate on camera.

A Well-kept Promise: PROMISE'S WORLD

    Dear Readers,

   Whenever I commit my attention to a challenge eater and their endeavors on and off screen - I'm mostly looking for two main things. One, obviously, is if they have the thing. If they've got that thing in them that brings them to heights others can't. This is something so many underground amateur eaters get wrong. It's not like learning a trade or reading a book, some people just don't have the skills. PROMISE'S WORLD This is imperative. Two, and most importantly, it's that they kept their promise. Their promise to their audience, the promise to the judges, and the promise they've made to themselves. This always comes with an invisible contract.

    The challenge world is filled with so much nonsense, so much fluff. There's so much time wasting, and so often the challenges never mean anything to them. They're just looking for a cheap thrill. A way to connect to a local audience, one that respects them. At least they think they do. A promise is always proposed but never made.

    In this instance, however, that Promise has been filled. Ten times over. Promise and her husband Saint both occupy the corner of challenge eating that many people don't consider, a casual challenge. A sleeper hit amongst the many challenges that I privy. 

    It's very apparent that they share a love for food and eating alike, and like many people, eat together. This creates a lovely dynamic to witness, as a tag team, their challenges barely even feel like challenges when they do them. Even under insane circumstance, they know how to deliver.

Ripe Young Talent: BANDANA.EATS.1

 Dear Readers,

    Nothing like a no bullshit, no frills, no nonsense kinda guy in my book. Just straight to the point, that's where Banana.Eats.1 comes in. Despite a bit newer to the game, Stan still stands on business. He doesn't let that get to him no matter the challenge. He approaches every video with a level of confidence that nobody can mimic. 

    His signature move - the "Quad Stack" if you will - involves orienting four pieces of pizza atop one another to streamline efficiency when eating his pie. He takes no prisoners. That means he can eat about eight slices in the time that a normal person can eat three. 

    One thing I don't understand about him, completely separate of his competitive approach - is why he would insist on calling himself Banana Eats, when he does no such thing? I haven't seen one banana let along an entire bushel of them in any of his content. So until then, the crown is out of view.

   To conclude, his approach is great. His cool black bandana keeps his sweat from cross contaminating the food, major respect points there from me. Love a good biker look.

Just A Couple Of Eaters: THE PRESIDENTIAL FAMILY

     Hello Readers,

    Thanks for tuning back in. On this edition of Rookie Mastication, I'd like to highlight some unique competitors in the scene - a married couple by the name of "The Presidential Family". The family is led by two beautiful individuals who have an equally lovely family. However, the family doesn't participate nearly as much in their amateur eating challenges as they do their vlogs. Daily vlog style.

    Recently I came across one of their videos, one of many, that highlighted a challenge they took on the conversation between healthy food and junk food. In the form of a challenge, unbelievable right? I think that is what truly sets them apart from the others on their level - their true commitment to the innovation of the challenge eating landscape.

      Both Andre ("Mr. President"), and Marisa ("First Lady") both are unique competitors in the way they attempt the challenges - in their own ways.

    Andre takes more of a presidential route like John F. Kennedy or William H. Taft. His outlook on life and our country truly represents a broader progression toward a streamlined challenge eating landscape. Something we're all working toward, but they seem to be working overtime for free (taxed).

    Marisa however follows a strategy closer to that of a first lady, like Eleanor Roosevelt, Michelle Obama, or Eleanor Roosevelt. Her approach to food challenges baffle my intuition as a competitive eating critic, but somehow every video they produce blows my tiny little mind clean out of the water. Maybe someday they will leave some of their passion for the rest of us. I just can't get over the approach she takes when eating Doritos chips or the Twix bar. She sets her own bar and every. single. time. she raises that bar high into the sky.

    Looking forward to many more casual approaches to the challenge circuit - including challenges that strive to twist the boundaries of their medium.

Rookie Eaters Community Outreach: Joey Chestnot

       Hello Readers,

    My name is Joey ChestNot, no affiliation with the true Joseph Chestnut, but simply a clever play on words. I want to welcome you to my new and active blog. Moving forward, this page will be fully dedicated to highlighting the amateur competition eater scene all around the world. The best of the underground in other words - the avant-garde. I have prepared many different blogs already contributing to documenting and archiving their achievements. Some of these folks aren't even fully aware of their potential in the competition world.

    Some of my favorite mainstream competition eaters include folks like Badlands Chugs, Joey Chestnut (of course...), LA Beast, Matt Stoney, GloZell Green, and Shoenice. Before they were famous, they were  just eaters. They all followed their love of eating and turned it into something we all aspire to be.

    Don't want to get too into the details of our operation here at Rookie Mastication, but like I've promised, a continuing flow on coverage of the next generation of professional competition eaters. Warts and all.
